The traditional protocols that the security community has counted on are proving insufficient in an era that is being recalibrated by artificial intelligence – a reality explored in a new ISACA resource examining the AI revolution.

The Promise and Peril of the AI Revolution: Managing Risk provides insights on the current state of AI, assesses the AI risk/reward landscape and offers context on the broader societal and ethical implications of AI’s maturation.

“The breakneck pace of the market – and the calls for regulation – may convince leaders to pause before official AI adoption or strategy work,” according to the white paper. “But as with so many things technological, users have already surged ahead in a snowballing movement that demands action now.”

From a security standpoint, the white paper details eight protocols and practices that provide an effective foundation for enterprises that are sizing up the impacts of AI – starting with the need to “trust but verify.”

“Organizations may develop misplaced trust in AI accuracy, just as we trust our calculator’s math is correct and no longer bother to check,” according to the white paper. “But AI is not a calculator; it is a perpetually evolving and complicated tool, one drawing from a sea of obscure data sources.”

There is a tension between many enterprise leaders’ understandable preference for caution and deliberation on the AI front, and the breakneck pace at which the market is embracing AI products and implementations. That means that organizations need to exhibit a sense of urgency in identifying the key risks and opportunities on the AI landscape, and act accordingly.
